A commemorative gift

Kathy and Max Martin created a scholarship for members on the cheer squad through the K-State Family Scholarship matching program.

Campaign Themes:

“We were so happy that our gift would be able to be applied to helping students in a significant way and very quickly. We are not able to give huge chunks of cash to build a scholarship fund rapidly, and the scholarship match program enabled the fund to grow with the generous match from Mary.” – Kathy Martin, 67’

Kathy Martin had attended every sport, including wrestling during her time at Kansas State University. She was there for the pre-games, crowd cheers, pompom routines, parade floats and personal appearances representing K-State. Kathy and her husband, Max Martin, have commemorated her time as a Kansas State University cheerleader and are honoring current cheerleaders through the K-State Family Scholarship match program.

“Our hope is that the scholarship will remain viable and be awarded to a deserving member of the K-State Cheer squad,” Martin said.

With the K-State Family Scholarship Program, new gifts of $30,000 are matched with $30,000 from the seed fund provided by Mary Vanier, for a total of $60,000. $10,000 goes into an expendable fund, making $2,000 scholarship available to be awarded to students immediately. The remaining $50,000 goes into the endowment, ensuring future generations of Wildcats will receive scholarships as well.

The Martins have given annually since they graduated K-State and started their teaching careers in 1967. Now, due to the match program, they were able to make a larger impact.

“We were so happy that our gift would be able to be applied to helping students in a significant way and very quickly,” Martin said. “We are not able to give huge chunks of cash to build a scholarship fund rapidly, and this program enables the fund to grow with the generous match from Mary.”
